The verdict is in. More than a third of Aussie families are travelling with extended relatives to help out with mid-holiday child-minding. On the rise now for several years, it appears the trend for multi-generational travel will not plateau any time soon.
In fact, 5% of holiday-making parents admit to taking relatives on holiday all the time. A special way to spend quality time with grandparents, aunts and uncles, a handy bi-product of multi-generational travel is the ready-made babysitting service available at no charge.
In 2014, Virtuoso Luxe Report listed multi-generational travel as the top travel trend. AARP reinforced this notion in 2016 by suggesting that a large proportion of international and domestic travel in the Boomer age bracket is spurred by the prospect of time spent with grandchildren, children, nieces and nephews.
Cruise lines and all-inclusive resorts have capitalised on this sustained pattern. Everyone’s needs are met when it comes to the movie showings, waterparks, pools, Kids Clubs, fine dining, comedy and cabaret evenings, bars and shore excursions included in family packages.
It is with good reason that many families consider globetrotting with their grandmas or adventuring with their aunties – and not just because it might give Mum and Dad the occasional night off. Ideal for families who don’t get to see each other often or are perhaps celebrating an important milestone, multi-generational travel is a lovely way to gather and enjoy new and exciting places!
