Skiing and snowboarding is the obvious attraction of this famed North American snow resort. But families will also find plenty to do off the slopes including tubing, bonfires and the incredible Alpine Rollercoaster.

Aspen has four mountains: Snowmass, Aspen, Aspen Highlands and Buttermillk.

Combined that’s 2321 hectares to play on.  The longest run is a whopping 8.4 kilometres.

The overall mix (all four mountains) is 6% beginner, 42.5% intermediate, 17.5% advanced and 34% expert. You can ski your entire holiday here without covering the same ground twice.

If you’re thinking that Aspen may not be the place for beginners – you would be wrong.

The beginners runs cover more than 344 hectares. As a comparison, Thredbo Ski resort in NSW is 480 hectares in total.

Each mountain offers something slightly different. Families should chose where to stay based on their skiing ability and what they want to get out of the holiday.

“Aspen is the best ski town in the United States,” US Mountain Travel Expert Bryan Donnelly says.

“It has the best for shopping, dining, nightlife and it has a a downtown core where locals and tourists mingle and window shop with ease.”

“Aspen Highlands gives a classic mountain feel with terrain for the advanced skiers.”

“Buttermilk offers the beginner skier a place to feel comfortable and learn at their own pace while also having the uber-popular X games back year after year.”

“Snowmass ski area is the icing on the cake in that it gives families a place to have slopeside, affordable hotel and condo options that are only a 30 minute free bus ride to Aspen.”

Aspen Snowmass is a great place for Aussie families to learn to ski. It has some of the best ski lessons in the world. Kids who learn to ski in a quality ski resort often pick up the sport faster.

The Aspen Ski & Snowboard School is internationally renowned, with a program to suit kids aged 2 and over. The emphasis is on fun and safety.

“Starting off in ski school will help ensure a solid foundation is set for the rest of the trip.

“Familiarisation of the equipment, safety awareness on the slopes and using the lifts, establishing or reviewing the proper way to ski will all help ensure the little ones have a good vacation and it will free up the day for the parents to get out on their own.”

Lessons are grouped by ages and according to skills and goals. The age groups are: 2.5 to 4 years, 5 to 6 years, 7 to 12 years and 13 to 17 years.

“Our programs have established age groups that are appropriate to enhance physical and emotional success and we have programs that offer all levels of skiing at any age.”

The Treehouse Kids Adventure Centre at Snowmass is a first of its kind in the ski industry, offering childcare facilities with ski school programs and rentals all under the one roof. Childcare is available from 8 weeks to 4 years old.

The Hideout at the base of Buttermilk is the perfect introduction to skiing for kids aged from 2.5 to 4. It has a gentle training slope for first turns, a magic carpet and four interactive indoor learning rooms for playtime during breaks from skiing.
