If you’re heading to the states over winter, you can’t pass up the opportunity to make snow angels at some of the world’s most popular, family-friendly ski resorts. From Nevada to British Colombia, the country boasts a variety of slopes for beginners and powder hounds alike. There are so many awesome ski resorts to choose from so we’ve narrowed it down for you.
Take on the Rocky Mountain slopes at Colorado’s Keystone Resort. With a whopping 3,000 acres of skiable terrain ranging from beginner to advanced, you’ll never run out of trail-blazing opportunities.
If you want to break up your skiing days, hire a tube, go ice skating, go snowmobiling or take a sleigh ride to give those legs a rest. Your quads will thank you later! Parents will love the Children’s Ski and Ride school where they can drop the kids off and know they’re in safe hands. There’s also the Kidtopia kid’s centre in town that hosts scavenger hunts, face painting, snowball-making and stargazing experiences for little ones.
Park City, Utah
Park City is one of the country’s largest, most popular ski resorts with 7,300 acres of skiable terrain. Just a short drive from Salt Lake City’s international airport, its rich mining history and sustainability initiatives are a huge draw card for snow-enthusiasts all over the world.
Park City has a range of programs for kids including beginners skiing and snowboard lessons and adventure, mountain and racing sessions for more advanced skiers. There’s a bunch of other activities off the slopes as well, including the Alpine Coaster. It’s an epic half-hour toboggan ride through stunning Wasatch Mountain scenery. Don’t forget the Flying Eagle zip line that will have you soaring high above the snow.
Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen, Colorado
Buttermilk is best known as the home of the Winter X Games and the Red Bull Double Pipe competition. With 470 acres of skiable terrain and a large, uncrowded beginners area, it’s an awesome spot for families who have a mix of first-time skiers and older powder hounds who want to how off their skills.
The new Breathtaker Alpine Coaster will take you hurtling along a mile-long track through the snowy forest scenery. You’ll appreciate a hot choccy at the mountain’s Cliffhouse cafe to get your breath back. When you’re ready to ditch your skis, grab a tube or snow disk for an alternative trip down the mountain.
Snow King Mountain in Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Snow King Mountain is the go-to spot for families visiting Jackson Hole. It has six beginner trails and thirteen intermediate runs that are separate from the rest of the mayhem on the mountain, making it a safe and relaxed environment for learners.
Other fun activities include night skiing, tubing, hitting the terrain parks and riding the Winter Cowboy Coaster. For an unbeatable view of Jackson, take a ride on the Scenic Chairlift and soak up your surroundings as you travel 1,500 feet up to the Snow King summit.
Big Sky, Montana
Only a short drive from Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky is the ideal place to set up camp and enjoy all the outdoor recreation opportunities on offer. There are tonnes of activities for kids of all ages.
Sleigh rides, kid’s concerts and mini ski camps will be a hit with the young ones while teenagers will get stuck into snow-hiking, zip lining, white water rafting and tackling the high ropes course. Revelstoke Mountain, British Colombia
While not technically in the states, Revelstoke Mountain in British Columbia is well worth a mention. Adrenaline junkies flock to this awesome Canadian ski resort for its heavy snowfall, variety of runs and awesome winter adventure activities.
See the mountain from a whole new perspective, soaring thousands of feet above the valley floor on a paragliding adventure. Snowmobiling tours are also a great way to explore Revelstoke’s incredible backcountry. Younger kids will enjoy snowshoeing, dog sledding and playing at the kids activity centre.
