New children’s space to open at Parrtjima, Australia’s only indigenous light festival

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Parrtjima Festival of Light welcomes a dedicated kids’ installation to its 2018 celebration. The annual festival will be held in Alice Springs from 28th September to 7th October and will include five large-scale light projections in its biggest year yet.

This is the first year that one of the interactive installations has been specially made for children to enjoy. The children’s space will include room for play and immersive artworks of bird shapes inside a tunnel.

The free event exhibits contemporary works from Central Australian indigenous artists. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the MacDonnell Ranges, it also showcases the natural majesty of the Red Centre.

“We feel proud to be helping people to experience culture, art and country,” says traditional owner and Parrtjima advisor Benedict Kngwarraye Stevens, “and inspiring young people [to realise] that culture has strength and beauty.”

‘Parrtjima’ roughly translates to ‘shedding light and understanding’ in a combination of local Arrernte languages. The festival is the only indigenous light festival of its kind and celebrates the timeless spirit of the natural landscape and its inhabitants.

The theme for Parrtjima 2018 is ‘Cultural Freedom.’ Many of the works feature ideas about the cycle of the sun and moon.
