The Royal Mile is Edinburgh’s most famous street and is, as the name suggests, about a Scots mile long. It’s the Old Town’s busiest street and runs from Edinburgh Castle all the way to Holyrood Palace. Along the street are shops, cafes and attractions, as well as historical sites like St Giles’ Cathedral and the Heart of Midlothian. During Edinburgh’s festival seasons the Royal Mile lights up with shows, buskers and street performers. Take a wander and explore some of the narrow cobblestone alleys and stairwells that stretch off the main street.
