Overview

Melbourne’s oldest jail, the Old Melbourne Gaol is a grim place with a dark and disturbing history. Explore old cells, grimace at macabre torture equipment and get to know its infamous interns. If you’re really brave enough you can also sign up for a night time ghost tour, not for the faint of heart. First opened in 1880, Old Melbourne Gaol together with the Old Watch House and magistrates Courthouse is a compelling and interactive crime and justice experience.  A place of austerity and cruelty where dangerous criminals were held alongside petty offenders, the homeless and the mentally ill, the gaol’s cramped and dank conditions were the last home for many interns.

Good to knows

  • For a truly immersive experience, get locked up in The City Watch House. With a Charge Sergeant as guide, visitors are ‘arrested’ and encounter what it is like to be locked up.
